Charmaine Denny has become the new town clerk of Dorchester following Steve Newman’s departure after four years in the role.
The role was first created in 1629 and was held by William Derby, before local families in the town took on the role, such as the Loder’s from 1676-1711, the Colson’s until 1724, the Stickland’s from 1777 to 1824 and the Symonds from 1853 to 1922.
In all this time there has never been a female Town Clark until now. Charmaine brings a wealth of exterience having most recenlty served as Weymouth Town Council as assistant clerk since 2019. Prior to this she spent time at Bournemouth Borough Council.
Speaking at the recent Dorchester Chamber for Business breakfast Charmaine said: “It’s an honor to be the first female Town Clerk, I intend to build on the foundations of the previous Town Clerk Steve Newman.
“Dorchester has a rich history and a stong community which I am looking forward to meeting over the next few months.”
Dorchester Chamber for Business extends a warm welcome to Charmaine and looks forward to continuing our close working relationship.
With around 100 members any business in Dorset can join Dorchester Chamber from business for £60p/a (no VAT).
