The Dorchester Agricultural Society was formed in 1840. It now holds a number of different events throughout the year including the Main Show every September as well as the Spring Show in March or April, a Flock Competition in June or July, Sheep Dog Trials, and, new for this year, a Ploughing Match in October.
To celebrate 175 years of the Dorchester Agricultural Society an Education Fund was launched in 2016, the 1840 Education Fund. This fund aims to encourage a better understanding of farming, horticulture, rural business and the countryside in Dorset. Grants are available towards travel costs for farm visits and capital projects.
